A friend showed me this today. It looks really good, like a combination of Miasmata and the Forest. Thinking of getting it after the 12th, hopefully it'll be good.

Survival games are boring.

The first comment (not the original post) sums up the major problems with this genre. Ark looks like any other open world survival game, except this time there are dinosaurs. They keep pushing out these games with little variation to the concept and usually in early access so they're buggy as hell. I don't get it, here is a list of disappointing games that fall into this category:
DayZ H1Z1 The Forest Stranded Deep Rust 7 Days to Die Rising World
The fact is they're all just Minecraft wannabe's except without the ability for unlimited creativity so they have to add in some gimmicky feature like dinosaurs, sharks, tribes, or... as every game seems to do nowadays, zombies.
I don't think there is any saving this game genre now, since it is completely over saturated with developers trying to make a quick buck rather than make a good and unique game.

Honestly, this game is focusing less on survival. Heck, when my friends and I were playing it, it was just all about dinosaurs.
It is still a survival game, but there is so much you can do with it instead. Out of all the survival games I've played (DayZ, The Forest, Rust) this is the only one I can carry on playing. The survival aspect is more toned down and it feels like I can interact with the world and do more than just build a house and survive. Last time I played, we just swooped down on some Chinese people with a few huge-ass birds and carried them to a volcano.
Even if it's not that much of a survival game, you still need to eat/drink, there's hypothermia and hyperthermia, you have servers where only primitive tools are available (that makes it pretty damn difficult to take down a t-rex.) So the gameplay can change dramatically depending on what you as a person would like to do. It's easy to find servers that are more dedicated to survival and less "LET'S GRIND TO LEVEL 65 SO WE CAN RIDE SABER CATS WITH MACHINE GUNS"
The game is getting new maps/mods in early access already, the game shows a lot of promise and the developers are actually listening to the community. If this keeps up then I'm sure it'll turn out well. I'm just hoping that they don't ruin it with a load of items added in that makes it easier to survive at an earlier level.
I just tranquilise people and drag them into a wooden box so they're my slaves. Others just rampage around on rexes and grief everything, others actually try and play seriously.
The genre can be saved, but it's going to change A LOT.
