Ha, the most common result in my matches is that my teammates all rage quit cos they think I'm trolling. I'm not, I'm just really bad
Haha awwww, it's definitely a game that practice pays off. A lot of it is about knowing when and were to be on the field, the rest just comes with execution and practice while hitting the ball.
These are some of the things I keep in mind when I play:
There are
3 positions on
attack and
defense. I do not know if there are actual names for them, so I decided to name them myself. While on attack there is the
Setter,
Spiker, and
Defender, and while on defense there is an
Aggressor,
Janitor, and
Goalkeeper. We will go over the attacking positions first, then defensive.
Setter: Brings the ball up the side of the Arena and attacks the ball while
in the corner. The goal is to feed the ball into the middle of the field for your teammates to take shots on goal. Passing against or off the wall works wonderfully in this situation once you get the hang of it.
Being proficient at wall riding will make this task a lot easier.Spiker: This player trolls back and forth, following the ball whichever side it goes to.
Usually sitting off center to one side of the field just inside midfield of the opposing team, the job is to force the ball back into the corner if the opposing defense clears it or take a deep shot if possible. The primary role of the Spiker relies on the Setter being able to put the ball in the middle, then it is the Spikers goal to
spike the ball into the goal, similar to a volleyball spike, but in this game it is commonly referred to as a slam dunk.
Aerial abilities will create far more opportunities while in this role.Defender: The Defender sits in their own half trying to maintain a good position
in between the ball and the goal in case the ball gets cleared by the other team. It is the Defender's job to stop any junky long distance goals from going in, while at the same time acting as a second Spiker. This can be risky but sometimes you just have to go for glory.
Being comfortable driving in reverse and doing reverse aerials are helpful skills to have.Transitioning from Offense to Defense is important!
Aggressor: The Aggressor's is usually going to be the closest player near the ball during transition. This player will usually be the
Spiker, because he is normally hovering around the middle of the field already. The goal is to slow down the offense and if possible eliminate the counterattack altogether and transition back to offense. This player should be flinging himself all over the place doing anything to disturb the counterattack while focusing on playing the ball away from the goal if possible.
Janitor: Named the Janitor because his job is to clean up the trash. This will usually be the
Defender in transition. The job is to retreat to goal as soon as possible and sit in goal until you have backup. If the opposing team plays the ball into the corner, the Janitor's purpose is to leave goal and clear the ball. If the ball is coming up the middle, the objective is to prevent an easy goal, forcing the ball into the corner or back up field and allowing time for the other teammates to recover.
GoalKeeper: This is usually the last person back in transition and since most counterattacks come from an attack it will typically be the
Setter or
Spiker. The priority is to ignore the ball completely and rush back to goal as soon as possible. Take a little bit of a wide angle to goal (take off ball cam to avoid hitting the
Janitor) and come in from behind. The Janitor will clear out of the goal to attack the ball and when he does, it is the GoalKeepers job to remain in goal and provide the last line of defense. This player must have good decision making abilities.
Tips- Frequently rotate between all positions and don't commit to one spot. If you ever feel out of position, just go defend your own goal as quick as possible and regroup from there (keeping in mind not to hit another player who may already be in goal).
- Rotations can happen very quickly when the ball is unable to be cleared from in front of either goal so be careful of each other while rotating.
- Do not drive straight to a defensive position in front of the goal if you believe someone is already in goal. They are prepared to make a save while you are usually rushing back to defend and too many times you'll just get in each others way and allow an easy goal.
- When transitioning from Offense to Defense, do not hit the ball if you have a teammate that is in a position to hit the ball up the field. If you hit it sideways or backwards, both players could now be out of position and a lot of the times the ball will be centered up for an easy shot by the opposing team.
- Only in panicked situations, do not play the ball off the back wall unless you are able to put it up the line. Playing it off the wall almost always put it in premium position for a spike/slamdunk from the other team. If this does happen, accept the "Great Pass!" spam during the replay.
I hope these help, if you have any questions let me know and I'll try to clarify.
Also posted it here, I think the formatting is easier to read here actually:
