Personally, I think that if people leave, their builds should be offered to new people. The build may be on an ideal plot of land, it may be of sufficient quality that someone wants to take it over or they may just strip it down and move on. I do agree that resources could probably be offered up at the spawn trading post, that's a good idea, but the builds themselves could be treated as commodities to be brokered. With that in mind, I'm thinking about a spawn real estate agency, taking the form of a board (or series of books) detailing a build's location and brief description (biome, style, size etc).
I'd made a similar suggestion to Alex previously when we started work on redoing Crispon's old plot.

I don't believe this is a great idea and here's why: 'Claiming' land and resources doesn't feel right for me, I mean we're a community and taking people's stuff and land whilst they're maybe having a tough time irl just doesn't seem correct. (I believe that if a player quits, their land should be taken, but not their resources and items though)
People might get bored of minecraft and they might not play minecraft for a few months, maybe even half a year ,but this doesn't mean that they're not a part of realm. This has happened to me many times and I reckon I would be very upset if I came on the server after a long break just to find that all of my stuff is gone.
I do believe that buildings in spawn should not be too big and that we shouldn't have structures that take a lot of space, so that more players can settle in close to spawn to maximize their interaction with other members.
Writing down coords and 'auctioning' them off to newcomers or realm members ruins the Mindcrack feel of Realm (In my opinion). This is not one of those huge servers on which every player has their own plot of land. I think that the best way of telling the other players that you want to build something somewhere is by placing a sign there and notifying them of your plans.

The people who arent playing now and say they are going to play on a new map will most likely be inactive after a month, and after 2 months they are only on when they are in a call with someone else who is on. Personally I would dislike a new map EXTREMELY much. I am not letting go on my castle, mkay... I agree its WAY too early for a new map. and if those who only play for a month want a new map then they can learn to play on long maps. Their desires shouldn't be prioritized over the dedicated members of realm who still play.

I think we all go through stages of being bored of MC, and it would suck to sign back on the realm after a few months to find someone has taken over your place. BUT is it really too difficult to let someone know youre not going to be on for a while? Skype and this forum are both adequate ways of doing so...
