I'm not really sure what this is all about, but Town of Salem just implemented a pretty big patch. It sectioned off game modes, added a new death animation, added new rewards, but the most interesting and confusing thing was this.
Town of Salem now has Ranked mode. You must have played 50 games in order to play Ranked. This is interesting because now it might actually separate the new players from the skilled and knowledgeable players. After 50 games everyone will at least have a general knowledge of the game, and at the very least they will know most or all of the roles.
The confusing part is... Why? This is a social game that comes down to a lot of dumb luck. A lot of people die to random lynchings or dumb luck by visiting the wrong person at night. There isn't much skill to this game until you make it through to the end.
Examples of dumb luck: Being the SK on first night and killing someone that the investigator just so happened to pick. You're the only person to visit and he dies. You get lynched second day.
Or how about an escort visiting an SK? Instant death.
Veteran going on Alert on first night and gets visited by investigator, escort, and framer?
Not to mention Medium's dying on the first night.
To me there is too much uncertainty to the game to actually implement a ranking system.
I am however interested to see what the rewards and ranks are. There has to be double money or some other incentive to play Ranked over normal. Does anybody know?
