For a community build, I suggest a rail system. Each member agrees to build a station at their base at an agreed elevation (I personally recommend y=11, but that's just me) and a certain amount of track. We all chip in for a 'terminus' at spawn.
We can limit the radius to avoid too much drain on resources, so people who built further away can either build loads of rails to connect themselves up, or just go without. It would of course be completely opt-in/out.
Just an idea.

Like 8 maps ago we had this railway system between a few towns, I don't think people used it that often though, since we just used the hub.
Personally I'd opt out of this mainly because I'd rather just use the hub for travel and not mine loads for a track. But it'd be pretty cool anyways.

Look at it this way. by opting out of this build it means one less community build. I don't know of any community builds planned yet besides the hub.

Why don't we make the rail system in the nether instead then? Less tracks are needed and it's faster in general?

I think we already have a nether hub. The point is just to stay in the overworld. I enjoy overworld travel more than nether myself.

I only ever walk to spawn and it's kind of close... after I finish my build who knows.

I was thinking of doing this, "for free" of course I would need some financial help for the rails, but I wanted to do it with coal powered carts :3
Also It would take a bit long... xD

I am building a minecart system that is related to my mining system so I would be able to start a rail system since I've already planned a rail system.
