So, I pretty much introduced myself with my application, but if someone didn't see it, I thought I should make a proper introduction as well as add anything that I forgot to mention.(Feel Free to skip a topic if you're not interested in it)
The Origin of Mahou Shounen
Hi everyone, my name is Edgar. My online name is Mahouxshounen though, or simply Mahou. You might be curious where this name came from, and what it means. It came from a popular Japanese Anime called Mahou Shoujo, which literally translates as 'Magical Girl'. I simply just swapped the Girl(Shoujo) to Guy(Shounen), and that's how my name 'happened'.
Why did I go with this name?
Because I am fascinated by magic, and anything related to it. Whatever game I play where I can pick a mage/support type class, I go for it, so it just made sense for me to pick a name that describes my interests, while also show my love for Japan.
Games in General
I played a lot of games, but I always found myself home the most in Fantasy RPG games. I really loved the Final Fantasy series(played through 1-9, the rest I still need to get), the Elder Scrolls series, Gothic 1 and 2, the Diablo series, and a couple of MMORPGs. I played League of Legends for a while, back when I was still in college, having a ranked team with my roommate and some of my other friends was quite fun. Except that they played too much and dropped out of college, leaving me alone, since unlike them, I didn't abandon my studies...that was not fun. I dabbled in some strategy games too, though the global growth never felt as fun to me compared to my own character's growth. Then again, when it's a mixture of both(as Warcraft 3, or Spellforce, where you have a hero, that works as an RPG character, yet you still build, gather resources and buy units like in other strategy games), it does made me stick with the game for a while more. When I got my PS2, and later a PS3, a whole new world opened up in front of me. Games like Devil May Cry, Uncharted, Dynasty Warriors, Dead Space, Heavy Rain, and Demon's Souls(I know some of them are accessible on the PC too, but I encountered these titles on the playstation first). There are tons of games I didn't list here, but if I would try to make a complete list of what games I played, the post would go on and on forever.
Minecraft : The Beginning
I'd like to also share with you guys how I first encountered Minecraft. It was my friend who introduced me to programming, and taught me the basics. He stumbled upon the game by accident, and showed it off to me. He didn't even know how to build a crafting bench, or anything back then. Punching zombies, and trying to survive was all he did, yet we had different opinions on the game. He hated it, and after that one time playing it, he never played again. However, I was rather fascinated by the game, and how you could literally break every block, and build whatever you wanted. It took maybe a bit more time than it should have for me to realize how to use a crafting bench. I tried to press "E" close to it over and over in hopes of opening up the 3x3 crafting interface instead of the personal 2x2 one. For probably an hour, I never even thought of trying to use right click on it. But once I gained access to the ability to craft, I got really excited, and fell in love with the game even more.(I have to admit, back then I used a pirated copy of Minecraft...but in my defense, I got it from my friend, and I was very young, and clueless about such things as video games are needed to be bought and such. However, I did rectify my mistake, and bought the game to support the developers, and enjoy the game legally).
Programming, from hobby to profession
As for programming, since I mentioned it a couple of times. Yes, programming was, is, and will always be a really important part of my life. From a simple interest in game making, it turned into a hobby for me, and hopefully it will soon evolve into my profession in the coming months. I already spent half a year as an intern at a game maker company, making phone games, and web browser games. I didn't finish a project though during that time sadly, so I have nothing to show. If I would have, a link would be sitting right here for you guys to try out the game I made...
I mainly program in C++, and use the SDL library to add sprites, music, and other utilities to my programs. Currently, I'm at the level of the Atari era(I can make games like Snake, Pong, Tetris, Pacman), and now I practice to be able to do more complicated things, like a platformer(Super Mario), or a shooter(Probably a space game, like Gradius, or Space Invaders), probably a Beat-Em Up game(like Final Fight, or Double Dragon), sort of advancing myself into the Sega/Nintendo era. As a lone programmer though, it's a pretty slow progress.
Writing. Yeah, I probably do a lot of that.
Other than drawing, and playing music, I also had an interest in writing stories. I wrote a lot of short novels, though I never published them anywhere. Writing and drawing were my two main loves before programming came around. When I was 10-12, I started making a small comic book, that was telling the story of a detective, who was investigating a series of strange disappearances, leading him to encounter strange things, the occult, dark magic, demons eventually. A group of people joined him, as the world was going into ruin, the demons rising to power, and the resistance fighting back against them. It was a mixture of action and drama. Looking back at it, it was a really cheesy story, but I'm still not sure how it popped out of my head. I actually made about 24 episodes of it, separated into 2 seasons. I just love storycrafting, and probably that's one of the reasons why I wanted to become a game maker...since I think that gaming is the best medium to experience a story. That is only my personal opinion though, not something that should be considered as a global fact or truth.
That is probably all I can think of about myself at the moment. If you have any questions about me, feel free to ask. I hope I'll get to know you guys soon, and have fun gaming together.
