Bit gutted tbh - I was preparing to start a storage room that used item frames.

Really like the idea of a farmer market, but I can see an issue occurring. What if Joe Biden logs in, he has feathers, but needs leather for his books, and thinks 'no problem, i'll go to the market and just trade in my feathers for leather or whatever'. He gets to market and see that no one is around in the market, (Joe Biden is from the other side of the world and gets on when the server has a down time). He now has two options, stay up late (for him) till the market opens, or go kill some rabbits (there are worse things to do then this, but i won't say them).
So, keep a farmers market type of idea, players go to trade in their resources. Instead of trading with other players, how about trading with 'machines' instead. Walks over to the leather dispenser, puts a feather in the chest, the dispenser then shoots out a leather. The chest then dispensers the feather into a series of hoppers which transports it into another chest that opens up the exit door. About once a week or so, an 'official' comes by and empties out the exit chests and puts them in the proper dispensers.

I really like this market idea. I think we could get it working and it'd give people more reasons to build at spawn.

I feel like trading with machines won't solve the redstone issues. Why don't we just say that people can leave items they want to trade in a chest in their own stall, then people can trade with them while they're away? Honour system.

The machines would simply be a "right I put X amount of items here and it gives me X amount back" pretty much just a dispenser and a pressure point.

Well, at least for now, we can work on a community area for the market, regardless of which path we go down.

Do torches cause lag? (server lag)

Everything causes lag to a certain extent, but no, torches are fine (I'd be lagging the whole server then XD)

I voted for 3 and 10 as they should be the most effective. I know you mentioned lava flows being a minor issue, however in my experience lava flows are one of the largest culprits for block lag. As for myself, I have a mob farm near my base it was designed to be turned on and off though. The thought of having to register my farm location gives me the chills. I know I have seen some pretty large farms out there and redstone clocks that never seem to be turned off and we should probably focus on those issues before making people register their humble and much smaller farms.
That said, if anyone notices a significant increase in lag when my little chunk is loaded please let me know so I can adjust accordingly.
Edit: I've played on servers with similar gear and we had auto farms farming thousands of wheat at a time and never had an issue with block lag, I think this must be related to folks afk'ing at mob spawners.

is the issue with the register, the idea that everyone will know where your farm is? because if that's the case then maybe the information should only be available to the powers that be.

minecraft.gamepedia.com/Entities#Types_of_entitiesSorry for the late reply, probably you already did look it up yourself, but no, signs are not entities, so people should use those rather than item frames. EDIT : Didn't see the whole second page section, I replied to DSNorth's question. But yeah, the Minecraft wiki lists all entities, and signs are not amongst them.

Well of course, every entity AND block-entity cause lag, but the real question is....do signs cause the same amount of lag as item frames? Since if they cause less lag, they should be preferred over item frames. If you have a big storage you have to label your goodies somehow....compared to an item frame, you can 'label' 4 chests instead of one(4 lines of text on a sign compared to one item inside the frame). So I still think that signs are better than item frames. But it's just my opinion.

Item frames look better though.
I'm 3k blocks out and my chunk is only realistically going to be loaded when I'm there - is it a huge problem?

-Blocking off redstone in a build, cause the light updates it generates can cause alot of lag aswell. Can you elaborate on this? Otherwise, I'd have to vote for registering of farms. I don't see it as invasive or limiting in the slightest. Not to be a dick, but I don't see why people need to have an excessive number of personal farms. If you're joining a multiplayer survival server such as this, you should be aware there's a community involved. I'd also agree that limiting the amount of personal farms would increase the social interaction. AFKing also needs some general guidelines.
PS. What about very basic spawner mob farms? To my knowledge they only activate while you're in very close proximity, and most hostile mobs despawn at a certain distance, correct?
