As a lot of you already know: last night there were constant server crashes. This is due to TPS lag (Ticks Per Second.) Basically: the server is becoming too strained by entities, redstone etc. I, along with several other members, went to certain farms and deactivated them. A few hundred farm animals were also killed. This seems to have solved the crashing issue, although I feel like this is just a temporary solution whilst more farms will be built.
This is why I've altered a rule. Note that this willmost likely change depending on how the community views this rule definitely change.
I know that many of you enjoy making farms. Whilst I'm not the kind of player who builds farms I can understand why people will dislike this rule. The problem is that when there are 12 or so people on the server and half of them are afk, playing within chunks containing farms/active redstone or numerous entities (including items frames, I'll come onto this later.) The server is simply becoming far too strained to cope and ends up having block lag and crashing as a consequence. I've noticed that a lot of people have reported having boat lag, minecart lag etc. This is due to the server being too strained.
I would like to think that the host is having issues as the server has been fine with lag until the past few weeks (most evidently over the past few days.) However I'm highly doubting that now. Whilst upgrading the server would fix this issue, it would only create a temporary solution until people start building bigger/better farms and the such. Right now the server is 4GB. That's plenty for a simple vanilla server. I've been on many vanilla servers over the past few weeks and each one has less RAM than us. However, they also don't have such a large community/playerbase as Realm does.
I think all of us need to settle some sort of agreement on farms. It could be something major or something minor. Something needs to change though. Here are a few ideas. Note that I'm not in support of all these suggestions, I'm just listing things mentioned by players or ideas coming from my head.
1. Have a sort of register on all farms. By register I simply mean having a sort of record of what farms are on the server and perhaps the locations of them. That way players can see whether or not a farm is already built and can use that one instead. Another plus is that we can easily find farms and disable them individually to see if there's a difference in server strain. However, it may feel a little too harsh. If I wasn't the owner I wouldn't feel that happy with having to state every farm I have. However, I don't actually make farms so I guess it doesn't matter for me anyways.
2. Only have one farm per type. There could be one major farm for common type on the map. They would all be communal and large enough to sustain many players. However, I can see multiple issues with this so I'm not a fan of this idea.
3. Have an on/off switch for all farms. This way it's easy to disable farms.
4. Have a limit on the amount of entities allowed in one area. I can see people not liking this one.
5. Upgrade the server. Again, I don't see why I should pay more money to solve an issue temporarily. People will build larger farms still. The server used to be 3GB. I upgraded to 4GB and the lag was gone for a while. It seems to have returned now.
6. Have an area specifically designed for farms. This idea has been around for over a year now. I can see many pros and many cons with this. Imagine the lag in that area.
7. Don't be lazy and do it manually! (I swear this wasn't me.)
8. Redesign certain farms, especially ones with a lot of redstone so that it's less demanding on the server.
9. Use someone else's farm instead of using your own. This is easier the closer to spawn you are.
10. Limit AFKing.
If you have any more suggestions please say. It could benefit all of us. I'll most likely be adding more suggestions to this and the poll.
Opinions? We need to agree on something. I know that people will dislike this but please be constructive in replies.

8. All automatic farms need an on/off switch. This is so that we can see whether a farm is causing severe lag to the server. Try not to make too many farms and check with other players to see if a farm is already built that you can use instead. On the subject of farms: if you're the kind of player to build loads of farms and nothing else, then this server is not for you.
